Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs)
Mavesyn Ridware Parish Council is exploring the possibility of installing two SIDs in Hill Ridware and would like to consult you on the plans — The following questions and answers should help you:
Q: What is a SID?
A: A SID is a vehicle activated sign that uses radar to measure the speed of an oncoming vehicle and displays it using LEDs.
Q: As we already have speed humps in the village, why do we need to install two SIDs?
A: The speed humps have stopped a lot of the speeding that was happening in Hill Ridware. However, residents still tell us that some vehicles, particularly vehicles with high axles e.g. lorries, vans, tractors and 4×4 vehicles, have a tendency to speed because they are not affected by the speed humps.
Q: Where are you intending to site them?
A: Anything on a public highway has to be approved by Staffordshire County Council. A meeting has taken place with one of their employees to formulate a plan. This would be to place them on the Uttoxeter Road in the middle of the village, in the vicinity of Wade Lane.
Q: Why in this location?
A: Anecdotal evidence seems to show that the chicanes at the start of the village and the speed humps do slow drivers down initially but this does not persist with some drivers. The devices are to remind drivers that the speed limit in our village is 30mph.
Q: Will the SIDs stop people exceeding 30 mph?
A: No. Drivers who are determined to speed will continue to do so unfortunately. However, most aren’t like this and do respond responsibly when reminded of what speed they are doing.
Q: How much will they cost to buy and install?
A: Between £8,000 and £10,000 depending on the SID selected. However, £6,500 will be paid by the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). The remainder of the money would come from our reserves.
Q: Does a SID collect data on traffic?
A: Yes. The SIDs we want to install can collect data and provide us with accurate data on driver behaviour, which is another reason to install the devices.
Q: How do I respond to this consultation?
A: You can email the Parish Clerk at clerk@mavesynridwareparishcouncil.gov.uk or by post at:
Lewis Anderson, MRPC, 119 Field Lane, Burton on Trent, Staffs, DE13 ONJ.
Updated 15/11/24 — Based on the responses collected, the consultation identified that residents do not consider speed is an issue within Hill Ridware.
